A great place to process deer meat ~ correction as per my BOSS: Venison!

A little while ago my husband went hunting with a few of his friends. This was his second expedition! Amazingly enough for a novice that he is in this matter he did he kill a deer from afar. We called a few places, talked to a few people and decided to follow one of my toddler's daycare teachers and took the meat to a local place called Maple Creek Farm in Pewaukee. I would highly recommend them and will be the place we will go to in the future. From the meat we got deer dogs with cheese (which I must say I was not very excited about at first until I tried the first one), deer stick with a hint of spiciness, summer sausages and so on.

This farm also raised their own pigs and I cannot wait for this year's Day of Portugal festivity I will be hosting as I am going to get a suckling pig and make it the Portuguese way called "Leitão da Bairrada". I think this will be a treat for the guests coming.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from last Sunday

I receive every Sunday's issue of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and it usually takes me the whole week to go through the paper. Only yesterday did I notice an article on Lisbon, Portugal. No, not Lisbon, WI! In love with Lisbon.

I carefully read the whole article and enjoyed it thoroughly of course, being Portuguese and seeing the capital of my country displayed in the local paper. This morning I decided to re-read it online as I wanted to make sure I did not miss anything about the article as well as to put in my two cents about it in on a comment. I must admit the article is extremely well written and certainly deploys Lisbon's history and culture. What is lacking to me though is its wonderful food and the modern part of Lisbon. Indeed Lisbon is filled with centuries of history and charm but in my eyes it is also a very modern city, where the Portuguese not only accept the new but actually strive for it. The shock on the old and the modern is what make this city so very unique. you can walk down a cobblestone tiny road filled with old buildings on both sides, suddenly decide to enter a bar, that from the outside does not look like much yet you become transplanted to the 21st century with modern art and design, or as you keep on walking you get glimpses of modern architecture or bridges and this contrast amazingly even works wonderfully.

Now if Portugal is in you plans in the future, why not leave a comment and I would be delighted to virtually show you around my beloved country and suggest the non-touristy spot to visit and eat at along with the must see monuments that have been standing there for endless centuries.

Restaurant Review - Peking House, Pewaukee

I must admit I had gone there a few times and did not understand why the rave about this restaurant, that is until this past Monday, when I went again and instead of asking for the American menu we asked for the Chinese one (no worries it is all still written in English). So skip the lunch buffet and the American menu altogether and you will be in for an amazing surprise!

Not knowing what was good or not we all just decided to choose a plate each and see what we would get. WOW... All were amazing. Now I finally understand the reason this restaurant is so talked about. Here is what we chose:
Spicy Lamb with Vegetables - my choice
Noodles with Ground Pork - my tween's choice
Steamed Fish with Vegetables - my toddler's dinner
Spicy Pork - my husband's choice

They all were fantastic choices and we cannot wait to go back there and keep on trying different things.

It has been a while...

I am sorry I have not written in a while but between switching jobs, re-organizing my life and with a toddler life is never boring and always on the go. Now that I am somehow better organized and after restarting the food blog I am ready to start tackling this one too. Expect to see changes in the looks of the blog along with the latest news from our area.

Monday Recipe - Pan seared tilapia fillets with lemon cilantro marinate

I love to eat fish as well as to cook it. I must admit though I prefer to cook a whole fish - that means with its head- than fish fillets. I was feel a little overwhelmed with them. After much reading recipes from halfhourmeals.com, two of them caught my attention and I decided to blend them together in my own way. My inspirations were Fried Fish with Coriander/Cilantro Sauce and Herb and Lemon Butter Tilapia.

INGREDIENTS

12 tilapia fillets
oil
salt & pepper to taste
chives

For the cilantro sauce
1 bunch Cilantro
1/2 bunch Parsley
1 cup Green onions
4 cloves garlic
lemon juice from 3 lemons
1 cup seafood stock (from the shells and fish bones)
1 cup Heavy cream
1 tbsp peppercorns
a dash of sea salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Season the fillets with salt & pepper
  2. Add a little oil to a cast iron pan
  3. Slightly brown the tilapia fillets
  4. Remove them from pan
For the cilantro sauce
  1. Add all ingredients in a blender and blend it until you get a nice smooth green sauce
  2. With the cast iron pan still warm, remove excess oil add the green sauce
  3. Let it simmer for about 2 minutes, then add the heavy cream
  4. Add the Tilapia fillets for about 2 minutes
  5. Decorate the fillets with chives
